This web seminar will discuss the structural design and detailing requirements for ordinary and special steel moment frames specified under the provisions of the 2018 IBC, ASCE 7-16, AISC 360-16, and AISC 341. Intermediate steel moment frames will only be addressed by explaining why they are not commonly used. The following topics will be presented:

  • Seismic detailing requirements for steel moment frames that are commonly overlooked
  • Examples illustrating the mixing of steel moment resisting frames with wood lateral-force resisting systems and compliance with seismic detailing requirements, even when wind load governs
  • Performance of past design leading up to current design philosophy for steel moment frames
  • Comparisons of design and detailing requirements for various steel moment frame systems
  • Background on the exceptions for increased height of ordinary steel moment frames
  • Challenges when using steel moment frames in wood construction
  • Helpful reference documents for practicing engineers

Damon Ho, M.S., P.E., is an Engineering Supervisor for Simpson Strong-Tie. His efforts are focused on customer and staff technical support for moment frame design and fabrication. His design projects have included steel and concrete commercial buildings, multi-story cold-formed steel framed buildings, retrofit of existing light-framed commercial buildings. Damon received his undergraduate degree in Architectural Engineering and his MBA from California Polytechnic San Luis Obispo. After practicing structural engineering in Southern California, he went on to obtain a Masters in Civil Engineering from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. Damon was also a member of the Cal Poly Architectural Engineering faculty from 2001 to 2007.

Brandon Winter, P.E., is a Senior Branch Engineer at Simpson Strong-Tie working out of our Northern California facility since 2014. His focus at Simpson Strong-Tie is providing customer support and training on Lateral Systems, with an emphasis on the Special Moment Frame product lines. Project designs and support include soft story retrofits in the Bay Area, residential & commercial retrofits and new construction, URM retrofits, and technical design support for structural steel projects including commercial, school, airport, and office buildings. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 2005. From 2005 to 2014, Brandon practiced structural engineering in Southern California. Brandon is a Registered Professional Engineer, licensed in the state of California.
