Now that the 2018 IBC is adopted in the states of California, Oregon, Georgia and elsewhere, design professionals, code enforcers, and others must pay close attention to the reference standard from which its loading provisions including seismic design requirements are derived. That standard has been updated from ASCE 7-10 including Supplement No. 1 in the 2015 IBC to ASCE 7-16 in the 2018 IBC.

Changes from ASCE 7-10 to ASCE 7-16 are many and their impact will be far-reaching. The title of the standard has changed to Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for buildings and other structures. A major chapter on design for tsunami loads has been added. There’s a new Appendix E on performance- based fire resistant design. The seismic ground motion maps have changed again and rather significantly. The site coefficients by which mapped ground motion is modified are going to be quite different. The two changes together will have a major impact on seismic design. There are other major changes in the seismic chapters including many altered or new provisions for nonstructural components and nonbuilding structures. There are also major changes in the snow chapter and the wind chapter. The design wind speed maps are quite different from the maps in ASCE 7-10. This seminar introduces the major changes to attendees and explains the changes and discuss their impact.

Part 1 of the seminar is devoted to the non-seismic chapters: All of ASCE 7-16 excluding Chapters 11-23. Part 2 is on the seismic design provisions contained in Chapters 11-23.

Dr. S. K. Ghosh is known internationally for his work in earthquake engineering. He has influenced seismic design provisions in the United States for many years by serving on or chairing numerous committees and advisory panels. He specializes in the analysis and design, including wind and earthquake resistant design, of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. Dr. Ghosh is active on many national technical committees and is a fellow of ASCE, SEI, ACI, and PCI. He is a member of ACI Committee 318, Standard Building Code, and the ASCE 7 Standard Committee (Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures). He is a former member of the Boards of Direction of the Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI). In addition to authoring many publications in the area of structural design, he has investigated and reported on structural performance in recent earthquakes.
