This one-day seminar was taped in Southern California in April 2008. Following a presentation of the equivalent static force procedure, topics such as simplified design procedure, redundancy, dynamic analysis, orthogonal effects, anchorage of walls to diaphragms, and diaphragm design are covered. Comparisons are made with the corresponding provisions of the 1997 UBC, whenever that is practicable. Also, importantly, several numerical examples are included, illustrating some of the most frequently used code provisions. Example 1 illustrates application of the equivalent static force procedure to the design of a low-rise frame building. Example 2 illustrates application of the simplified design procedure to a low-rise shear wall building. Example 3 is on diaphragm design. Example 4 is a multi-part example illustrating ASCE 7-05 provisions concerning anchorage of concrete and masonry walls and attachment of nonstructural components to a structure.

While much attention was paid to seismic design in our "Transitioning to the New California Building Code (Structural Provisions)" seminar, this seminar provides more thorough coverage and dedicates the time necessary to fully understand the new seismic provisions.

Different states have different requirements and regulations concerning acceptance of PDH credits for self-taught classes. For self-taught courses, which include viewing of DVDs, please check with the states where you are licensed. For instance, in the State of Oregon, the Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineers and Land Surveyors (OSBEEL; www.osbeels.org ) allows up to 6 PDHs for viewing DVDs like ours.

Dr. S. K. Ghosh is known internationally for his work in earthquake engineering. He has influenced seismic design provisions in the United States for many years by serving on or chairing numerous committees and advisory panels. He specializes in the analysis and design, including wind and earthquake resistant design, of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. Dr. Ghosh is active on many national technical committees and is a fellow of ASCE, SEI, ACI, and PCI. He is a member of ACI Committee 318, Standard Building Code, and the ASCE 7 Standard Committee (Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures). He is a former member of the Boards of Direction of the Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI). In addition to authoring many publications in the area of structural design, he has investigated and reported on structural performance in recent earthquakes.

Ms. Susan Dowty received her Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 1984 and her Master of Science degree from California State University, Long Beach in 1990. She is a registered civil and structural engineer in the State of California and has over twenty years experience in the administration and development of the Uniform Building Code provisions. She has played an active role in the development of structural provisions for the International Building Code, serving as the Structural Committee Secretariat. She has also been instrumental in the development of a number of structural engineering related publications produced by ICC and SKGA. She served as the consultant for the reformat of the ASCE 7-05 seismic provisions and served a four-year term on the California Building Standards Commission.
