Seismic Design Using Structural Dynamics
This half-day seminar was presented by Dr. S. K. Ghosh in Southern California in May 2009. The seminar presents the requirements for seismic design using structural dynamics, with emphasis on the response spectrum analysis method. Theoretical background information on response spectrum analysis as well as a clear, step-by-step procedure for designs based on such analysis is presented. Engineers, code enforcement officials, building designers, faculty, and advanced students seeking an understanding of seismic design based on dynamic analysis would benefit immensely from this seminar. The seminar is based on ASCE 7-05 and the 2006 and 2009 IBCs.
Dr. S. K. Ghosh is known internationally for his work in earthquake engineering. He has influenced seismic design provisions in the United States for many years by serving on or chairing numerous committees and advisory panels. He specializes in the analysis and design, including wind and earthquake resistant design, of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. Dr. Ghosh is active on many national technical committees and is a fellow of ASCE, SEI, ACI, and PCI. He is a member of ACI Committee 318, Standard Building Code, and the ASCE 7 Standard Committee (Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures). He is a former member of the Boards of Direction of the Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI). In addition to authoring many publications in the area of structural design, he has investigated and reported on structural performance in recent earthquakes.
Ms. Susan Dowty received her Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 1984 and her Master of Science degree from California State University, Long Beach in 1990. She is a registered civil and structural engineer in the State of California and has over twenty years experience in the administration and development of the Uniform Building Code provisions. She has played an active role in the development of structural provisions for the International Building Code, serving as the Structural Committee Secretariat. She has also been instrumental in the development of a number of structural engineering related publications produced by ICC and SKGA. She served as the consultant for the reformat of the ASCE 7-05 seismic provisions and served a four-year term on the California Building Standards Commission.
