Stephen V. Skalko, P.E.

The presentation will cover basic examples for estimating the fire resistance of various building assemblies such as walls, columns, beams and floors/roofs in existing buildings. The examples used will demonstrate compliance with the fire resistance requirements of the 2018 International Building Code. Course material presented will cover using code recognized technical documents/provisions and other suitable resources to document fire resistance based on alternative means and methods.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  1. Participants will be provided an evaluation approach to document estimated fire resistances for existing building elements for approval under the alternate materials and methods provisions of the IBC.
  2. Participants will gain a working knowledge of several technical resources available, including Section 722 of the IBC, to document expected fire resistance of building elements.
  3. Participants will be presented real world examples using alternate methods to determine the fire resistance requirements for key building elements including the structural frame, floors, roofs and exterior walls.
