An Overview of the Structural Provisions of the 2021 IBC
This seminar provides an overview of the structural changes from the 2018 to the 2021 IBC. ASCE 7-16 remains the reference standard for design loads; however, Supplement No. 1 to ASCE 7-16 is adopted. This supplement is explained at the seminar. The design load combinations will no longer be in the IBC, except for the alternative basic ASD load combinations. For everything else, a reference is made to ASCE 7-16. Significant changes in Chapter 17, Special Inspections and Tests, and Chapter 18, Soils and Foundations, are discussed. The reference standard for concrete design and construction is updated to ACI 318-19. The very significant and substantive changes in this standard are outlined. The other major standard update is that the 2015 edition of the Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS) has been replaced by the 2021 edition. Buddy Showalter will present a brief segment on SDPWS changes.
Dr. S. K. Ghosh, Ph.D. is known internationally for his work in earthquake engineering. He has influenced seismic design provisions in the United States for many years by serving on or chairing numerous committees and advisory panels. He specializes in the analysis and design, including wind and earthquake resistant design, of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. Dr. Ghosh is active on many national technical committees and is a fellow of ASCE, SEI, ACI, and PCI. He is a member of ACI Committee 318, Standard Building Code, and the ASCE 7 Standard Committee (Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures). He is a former member of the Boards of Direction of the Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI). In addition to authoring many publications in the area of structural design, he has investigated and reported on structural performance in recent earthquakes.
Buddy Showalter, P.E. is a Senior Staff Engineer with ICC's Product Development group – responsible for development of technical publications and education related to building codes and standards. He is also a member of the Editorial Board for STRUCTURE magazine, published jointly by NCSEA, ASCE/SEI, and CASE. Prior to joining ICC, Showalter spent 26 years with the American Wood Council. He is a graduate of Virginia Tech.
