This webinar starts with a brief review of the material behavior that differentiates glass as a structural material from other more commonly used materials. Various examples of the design of glass to current US codes and standards will then be reviewed, including typical edge-supported glass panes per ASTM E1300; a-typically supported vertical glass elements; panes or planks supporting gravity loads; glass beams or fins; and a brief introduction to basic bolted connections. Generation of the appropriate glass allowable strength values dependent on glass type and duration of loading per ASTM E1300 and consideration of post-breakage behavior are included.

SPEAKER:
Andrea Hektor, S. E., joined KPFF Consulting Engineers in Portland, OR after earning both her bachelors and masters degrees in engineering from Cornell University. She is actively involved in educating the design community, and has a particular interest in unique and non-typical structures. While the bulk of her work is in buildings, KPFF’s façade design work has given Andrea the opportunity to work on glass fin wall structures, cable-supported glass walls, and structural calculations for atypical glass pane support conditions. Andrea is actively involved in the committee that governs ASTM E1300, and regularly dedicates time to attend conferences related to glass engineering.
